Field Notes from the Wild Frontiers of Gaming
Chart the
Savage Frost Realm
We track the coldest, most unforgiving worlds in gaming and bring back honest reviews, hard-won boss guides, and deep lore breakdowns. No hype, no filler — just seasoned dispatches from the trail.
Base Camp
A gaming blog run like an expedition
SavageFrostRealm started in a Leederville share-house in 2016 with a shared spreadsheet, three second-hand consoles, and a stubborn refusal to review a game we hadn't finished. Eight years on, that rule still holds.
We publish two long-form pieces a week — a full playthrough review and a mechanics deep-dive — plus a monthly patch-notes roundup. Every guide is written from our own save files, tested on both PC and console, and dated so you always know how fresh the intel is.
The Route
How every dispatch gets made
Full playthrough
We finish the campaign start to end — no early-access hot takes. Difficulty, endings and grind are all logged as we go.
Systems teardown
Combat, economy and progression get pulled apart with real numbers, frame checks and side-by-side build tests.
Field verification
A second tracker re-runs key sections on different hardware so a guide never rests on a single machine or patch.
Publish & patch-watch
We ship the piece, then keep it dated and updated as patches land, flagging anything that changes our verdict.
What We Carry
Coverage that earns its keep
Boss & Encounter Guides
Phase-by-phase breakdowns with tell timings, recommended builds and AUD-value tips on which items are worth the grind. Averages 3,000 words per fight.
Lore Expeditions
Deep dives into world-building, timelines and hidden item descriptions — the connective tissue most reviews skip. New drop every second Thursday.
Performance Field Tests
Frame-rate captures, settings comparisons and honest steam-deck verdicts across PC and current-gen consoles, re-run after every major patch.
Before & After
Patch impact, dragged into the light
Drag the handle to see how a headline patch changed the same scene — launch build on the left, post-patch on the right.
Frostspire Keep, our most-read teardown — fog density and lighting overhauled in the 1.7 winter patch.

Trail Questions
Frequently asked
Never. We buy the majority of games we cover at retail, and any review copies are disclosed at the top of the piece. Scores are decided after a full playthrough and can't be bought, boosted, or negotiated by publishers.
Two long-form articles land every week — usually a full review on Monday and a systems or lore deep-dive on Thursday. We also post a monthly patch-notes roundup on the first weekend of each month, tuned to AEDT/AWST release windows.
Every review is checked on at least a mid-range PC and one current-gen console, and Steam Deck verdicts are added where relevant. We list the exact hardware and driver versions in each article so you can compare against your own rig.
Yes — we run a handful of paid guest expeditions each quarter. Send a short pitch and a writing sample through the contact form below. We pay a flat AUD rate per accepted piece and only commission topics we haven't already covered in depth.
The weekly dispatch is completely free and always will be. There's an optional Camp Supporter tier at AUD $6/month for early access and monthly Q&A calls, but nothing behind the paywall is ever a review verdict or a boss guide.
